The PANGU Enhancement project for ESA is led by the Space Technology Centre. The aim is to provide a tool which is able to support the design of advanced navigation and hazard avoidance techniques based on vision, lidar and/or radar altimeter sensors.

The objectives of the proposed activity are to provide: high fidelity modelling of Martian and Lunar surfaces, based on interpolated real DEMs when available, with added realistic and representative small scale features; high quality and fast sensor simulation avoiding aliasing effects; simulation of other interactions with the surface including lander shadows, dust caused by rocket motors and rover traction; simulation of star fields based on information from any available star catalogue; support for descent, landing and rover applications; simple to use graphical user interface for generating new planetary surfaces; tools and libraries to support the ready integration of PANGU with other simulation tools and environments.
